Abstract:
Georeferenced aerial photographs of the Yellowstone River in Park County, Montana, 1954 and 1955. The data set consists of partially rectified, black and white digital mosaics of historic aerial photos with a horizontal resolution of 2.5 feet, of the Yellowstone River corridor from Gardiner to Springdale, Montana.

These photos were scanned from paper copies of U.S. Soil Conservation Service photos obtained from the National Archives.
Purpose:
The images of the 1954-1955 river corridor were prepared for use in mapping historic changes in planimetric channel features, riparian vegetation and land use of the Upper Yellowstone River corridor. This work was performed in support of the Upper Yellowstone River Cumulative Effects Investigation.

Data Quality Information:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
These images were georeferenced, rectified, and mosaicked using DIME software from Positive Systems. This is a process that warps the images to attempt to match control points between their photo images and ground control, rather than the standard practice of orthorectification using a digital elevation model. The locations of any features identified on these photos should be verified and adjusted using other sources of known accuracy.

The ground control for the 7 raster digital tiles that comprise the 1954 channel mosaic were developed using U.S. Forest Service and Surdex digital orthophotos that were imaged in 1999 and have a base accuracy of 3.3 feet for 90 percent of well-defined features. The accuracy report from the contractor suggests that some areas may be based on control whose accuracy is only 30 feet.

The RMS error for each tile, compared to the 1999 orthophotos, is as follows:
1 - Joe Brown to Point of Rocks: 22.1 feet
2 - Point of Rocks to Meditation Point: 24.7 feet
3 - Meditation Point to Grey Owl: 12.9 feet
4 - Grey Owl to Mallards Rest: 19.6 feet
5 - Mallards Rest to Dry Creek: 28.0 feet
6 - Dry Creek to Greeley Creek: 20.2 feet
7 - Greeley Creek to Springdale: 22.6 feet.

Process step:
Black and white, 9x9in, paper copies of the aerial photos were scanned at 800 dpi (the maximum resolution supported by the imagery, due to surface texture). Scans were then loaded, along with base imagery (USFS 1:24,000 orthophotos and SURDEX 1:6000 and 1:8000 orthophotos) onto a Windows 2000 WorkStation; a DIME project file was created and a rough mosaic layout was generated.

The base imagery and subject imagery were inspected to identify any coverage problems, and to ensure proper relative positioning (x,y translation and rotation), and scaling. DIME software was then used to automatically select tie points, using proprietary feature matching algorithims, within all overlapping image areas. Tie point density was greatest in the immediate channel corridor.

An iterative process was then initiated that resulted in the best fit geometric transformation (or warp) necessary to match the subject image to the base. Several successive iterations of automated and manual tie point selection and adjustment were done to provide the final output mosaic. QA/QC checks were observed throughout the process and included: assessment of linear errors, identification of gaps and breaks, visual verification of subject image match to base. Radiometric color balancing was then applied to the final mosaic
